  • Understanding the New PSLE Scoring System

The new PSLE scoring system in Singapore marks a significant change in how students' academic performance is assessed. This system, which replaced the previous T-score model, uses wider scoring bands called Achievement Levels (ALs). Instead of a precise score, students are now placed in one of eight ALs for each subject, with AL1 being the highest and AL8 the lowest. The total score, ranging from 4 to 32, is calculated by summing the ALs from all four subjects. A lower score indicates better performance.

One key feature of the new PSLE scoring system is that it aims to reduce the pressure of minor score differences between students. The move to Achievement Levels encourages a broader understanding of subjects rather than focusing on fine score margins. This change also supports students in choosing secondary schools that align with their strengths, as Secondary 1 posting is based on overall performance bands.
