  • What Is Niclosamide Used For?

Niclosamide 500 mg is an anthelmintic medication primarily used to treat infections caused by tapeworms. It is particularly effective against Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm), Taenia solium (pork tapeworm), Diphyllobothrium latum (fish tapeworm), and Hymenolepis nana (dwarf tapeworm).

The medication works by inhibiting the tapeworm's ability to produce energy, ultimately leading to the parasite's death. It is usually administered orally in tablet form and is absorbed minimally in the human gastrointestinal tract, which limits systemic side effects.

In recent years, niclosamide has garnered interest for potential applications beyond its traditional use. Researchers are exploring its efficacy in treating other parasitic infections, and even certain viral infections, including COVID-19, due to its antiviral properties observed in laboratory settings.

However, its primary and most established use remains the treatment of tapeworm infections, where it effectively clears the infestation with typically minimal side effects.
