Get a spot in the sun in Majorca this summer to see two tremendous forces at work.
Ancient Balearic Sea waves meticulously sweep away the day's beautifully made sandcastles.
Next, a modern trend, is the global tourism wave that is about to overwhelm everything.
No beach sand is unused. Finding a parking spot is like finding a gem.
If you leave your beach chair for a while, your possessions are taken to suit the eager intruders.
The constant buzzing of contactless payment gadgets in hotels, restaurants, and pubs shows a vibrant business on the island.
A symphony of trade fueled by unparalleled tourism.
Sonia Ruiz has not received any of the riches that fall on a wealthy Spanish neighborhood.
Meet the 31-year-old mother of one at a Palma park near the seaside.
Her four-year-old son Luca glides on playground slides without a care.
Sonia faces a major problem. The landlord wants them out and says finding a new home is impossible.
"Each day I search, and each day the rent climbs higher," she says.
As my apartment lease expires, I stop passerby to ask if they have any stuff. Since we have nothing, I worry about my son and I losing our home.
Sonia and her ex-partner must live together owing to financial difficulties. Despite earning 2,400 euros per month, they cannot pay rent separately.
"Multiple months' worth of deposits are requested from you." Some have even told me they don't want kids or pets. Numerous people search.
This weekend, Sonia and other Majorcans are protesting the rise in tourism, which they say is lowering quality of life.
According to advocates, tourists buying or leasing apartments for long periods throughout the summer are driving up housing costs.
"Maintaining this type of model is simply unfeasible," said 25-year-old Pere Joan Femenia outside Palma Cathedral.
He is part of "Menys Turisme, Més Vida" (Reduced Tourism, Improved Living).
He claims that excessive tourism is diminishing public spaces, services, and natural resources and making it impossible for residents to purchase housing.
Pere became a Greta Thunberg environmental activist five years ago. However, his focus is now on his island community's economic issues.
The transition from selling ordinary items to global firms selling ice cream is destroying our identity. Protecting our cultural legacy is important to him.
Pere points to the harbor, distant from the plaza's shops and people, and says some boats bring up to 12,000 passengers per day.
He disputes the idea that Majorca thrives on tourism growth. Many islanders are leaving permanently because they can no longer afford it.
Pere claims restricting incoming planes and docking ships will immediately relieve island stress.
During this weekend's Palma demonstration, catchphrases and flags will carry this need.
The Spanish National Institute of Statistics reported 14.4 million foreign tourists to the Balearic Islands last year, with Majorca being the most popular, followed by Menorca and Ibiza.
The institution reported a 9.1% increase in foreign tourists visiting the archipelago from 2022, with their spending rising 16.4%.
Activists say the Balearic Islands might attract 20 million visitors this year, including Spanish tourists.
As Spain's favorite attractions have changed, the debate over whether tourists provide more problems than benefits has heated up.
It seems like the air has changed this year. A recent Barcelona incident when visitors were blasted with water guns showed citizens' fury at its peak.
Malaga on the mainland and the Canary Islands have also seen protests. Popular Spanish tourist locations are trying to stop an apparently inexorable flood.
In summer 2024, British publications listed "unwelcoming vacation destinations" to avoid.
The Rotherham Green family is happily wading in Magaluf, a favorite British vacation location.
Dad Adam is taking his first abroad trip, but calling it a "vacation" is a stretch since he and his wife are closely monitoring his seven children.
"It's a whirlwind, but we're making progress." "It's fantastic, except for the scorching heat," he says.
I ask if the protests had deterred them from visiting Majorca.
Charlotte saw the news, but she avoided watching it to avoid feeling overwhelmed and destroying her joy for the planned and paid-for trip.
How do you view the protesters' main contention, that rising tourism is harming the area?
"Could it be that tourists are the ones who enhance this place and generate income?" he said.
Traveling the world is it. Without tourists, there would be no jobs, incomes, or anything. Do they not need it?
